Pallet Racking

New selective pallet racking costs $50–$200 per pallet position for roll-formed systems (Conesco, 2026). Structural systems cost $80–$250 per position. Used selective racking costs $20–$50 per position, offering 50–70% savings. Installation adds 15–35% to material costs. At 1,000 positions using $250/position material, installation adds $37,500–$87,500.

Pricing and Cost Structure

Pallet racking costs are calculated per pallet position rather than per bay. Material costs vary by system type, steel specification, and procurement source.

New Pallet Racking Costs (2026)

System TypeCost Per PositionBest For
Selective (Roll-Formed)$50–$200Diverse SKUs, direct access
Selective (Structural)$80–$250Heavy loads, high-seismic zones
Double-Deep$80–$300Moderate SKU count, higher density
Drive-In (2–4 Deep)$115–$500Few SKUs, bulk storage, LIFO/FIFO
Push-Back (Multiple Deep)$150–$450Medium SKU count, fast throughput
Pallet Flow (Gravity)$200–$500Perishables, strict FIFO requirement

Used Pallet Racking Costs

Used racking delivers 30–70% cost savings versus new material. Selective roll-formed systems offer the highest savings potential at 50–70% versus new. More complex systems like pallet flow show lower savings percentages (40–50%) due to specialized components.

System TypeUsed Cost Per PositionSavings vs New
Selective (Roll-Formed)$20–$5050–70%
Selective (Structural)$30–$7540–60%
Double-Deep$40–$100~50%
Drive-In$85–$16030–50%
Push-Back$100–$25040–60%
Pallet Flow$120–$30040–50%

Installation Costs

Installation labor adds 15–35% to material costs. At 1,000 positions using mid-range new racking ($250/position material), installation adds $37,500–$87,500.

Beam Load Capacity

Beam capacity is rated per pair of beams supporting one shelf level. Total weight stored on a level is shared across both beams. Capacity depends on beam length, face height, steel thickness, and manufacturer specifications.

Beam Deflection Limits

Maximum beam deflection limits prevent pallet instability and structural compromise. Standard limit is L/180, where L is beam length in inches. A 96-inch beam permits maximum deflection of 0.53 inches (96 ÷ 180).

Verification Checklist

  1. Confirm manufacturer and model for load capacity verification
  2. Request or obtain engineered drawings stamped by licensed PE
  3. Verify beam-to-upright connector compatibility with existing systems (if expanding)
  4. Inspect structural components for impact damage, bending, or corrosion
  5. Obtain itemized quote including material, freight, installation, and permitting
  6. Clarify warranty terms (new) or inspection certification (used)
  7. Review lead times and confirm delivery coordination with installation crew

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does pallet racking cost per position?

New selective roll-formed pallet racking costs $50–$200 per pallet position. Used selective racking costs $20–$50 per position. Structural systems run higher: $80–$250 per position new, $30–$75 used. Installation adds 15–35% to material costs depending on seismic requirements and site complexity.

Should I buy new or used pallet racking?

Used racking provides significant material cost savings. New racking includes manufacturer warranties, full documentation, and custom configurations with longer lead time. Choose new for permitted facilities or specialized systems. Choose used for standard selective configurations.
